Considering the Cost of Nursing Homes in Colorado Springs, CO

The average cost of a semi-private room in a nursing home in Colorado is more than $8,000 per month, while a private room tops $9,000 per month on average. Both estimates are slightly higher than the national average.

Savings accounts and other assets are often used to offset the high cost of nursing home care, but many nursing home residents may be able to receive help from some sort of insurance coverage.

Can Long-term Care Insurance Cover Nursing Homes in Colorado Springs?

Traditional health insurance plans may have some benefits useful to nursing home residents, but they don’t often cover lengthy stays in a nursing home.

Nursing home care coverage can more frequently be found in long-term care insurance plans. These types of plans can cover room and board, and some may also cover personal care. The amount of coverage will depend on your premiums and how much coverage you wish to buy.

To use your benefits, you will likely need to show you are no longer able to independently perform at least two activities of daily living, such as eating, bathing or dressing.

Does Medicaid Cover Nursing Homes in Colorado Springs, CO?

Health First Colorado, the state’s Medicaid program, covers long-term care administered at a nursing home. You must be eligible for Medicaid as determined by your income and resources, and your doctor must determine that you require a nursing home level of care.

If you qualify for Medicaid nursing home benefits in Colorado, you will be expected to spend almost all your income on care. Health First Colorado allows beneficiaries in nursing homes to keep $84.41 per month as a personal allowance in 2022.

Like most states, Colorado also has a Medicaid waiver program that allows beneficiaries to utilize the program’s long-term care benefits at home.

Does Medicare Cover Nursing Homes in Colorado Springs, CO?

Nursing home residents in Colorado may be able to utilize some Medicare benefits to help pay for some of their care, but Medicare only covers nursing home care during temporary stays at skilled nursing facilities.

A skilled nursing facility is an in-patient rehabilitation and medical treatment center, which is a bit different from a traditional nursing home.

  • A nursing home is where people live on a long-term basis to age comfortably and receive health care and custodial care.
  • A skilled nursing facility is designed for those who leave the hospital following surgery or inpatient care for an illness or injury and need time to recuperate before returning home.

Medicare will cover the first 20 days of an inpatient stay at a skilled nursing facility. Medicare Part A requires a daily copayment for each day of inpatient stays that last beyond 20 days. In 2022, the skilled nursing facility copayment is $194.50 per day.

The daily copayments can be covered by some Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) plans.
