Each Medigap plan available is standardized by the government, and each individual plan offers a different level of coverage.

Although the coverage options for each plan are standardized by the government, the actual price of each individual plan can vary depending on factors such as Age, Gender, Smoking Status, Health, and Location.

There are a few additional reasons monthly premiums might be higher for older beneficiaries, which include:

  • If you sign up during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period, you will not have to go through Medical underwriting. If you wait until after this period, you may have to go through Medical Underwriting to determine your Medigap plan costs. Because of this, it's best to sign up during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period.

Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period (OEP) is a 6-month period that starts as soon as you are at least 65 years old and enrolled in Medicare Part B.

  • Medigap Plan pricing can also be affected by pricing model that the Medicare Supplement insurance carrier uses. Each pricing model takes different things into account, and will affect the price of the Medigap plan.

    • Community-rated
With community-rated Medigap plans, every member of the plan pays the same rate, regardless of age.

For example, an 87-year-old who enrolls in a community-rated Plan G will pay the same Medigap premiums as a 69-year-old beneficiary who has the same Plan G in the same area.

    • Issue-age-rated
With issue-age-rated Medigap plans, premiums are based on your age at the time you enrolled in the plan.

You will typically pay less for an issue-age-rated plan if you enroll in the plan when you're younger. Your premiums also won't increase based on your age.

    • Attained-age-rate
Attained-age-rated Medigap plans set their premiums based on your current age. As you age, your Medigap plan premiums will gradually increase each year.

Along with this, Medicare Supplement Plans may increase in price over time due to inflation and other reasons. You can learn more about costs and pricing of Medicare Supplement plans by visiting the average cost of medicare supplement guide.

Standard Plan G vs High-Deductible Plan G

There are technically two types of Plan G's to be aware of, Standard Plan G and a High-Deductible Plan G.

The High Deductible Plan G comes with a higher annual deductible, $2,870 in 2025. This means for any of your coverage to kick in, you'll need to spend $2,870 out of your own pocket. After that $2,870, then your High-Deductible Plan G coverage will kick in.

Although your annual deductible will be higher with a High-Deductible Plan G, High-Deductible Plan G plans should have a lower monthly premium. In 2025, the average monthly premium for a High-Deductible Plan G was $57.92 or $695 per year.
