Top Four Summer Reads

by Lauren Neale | Published December 21, 2023 | Reviewed by John Krahnert

Did you know that reading can help prevent age-related mental decline as we grow older?  The data is not conclusive, but studies show that seniors who read a little every day positively improve their cognitive function.1  Reading can unlock not only new worlds and adventures, it may even unlock improved mental capabilities, making it a powerful resource for your health.

If you are interested in building your library list so you can add in more reading into your day to day, we are here to help!  Whether you plan to lounge on a beach or stay home this summer, we’ve compiled some summer reads for you to enjoy.  Here are our top four recommendations for this summer:

1. The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece by Tom Hanks (Fiction)

This serendipitous book is about the intertwined nature of several people’s lives.  A World War II soldier returns from the war-torn battlefield and meets his nephew.  But the homecoming is brief, after the soldier disappears.  The nephew creates a comic starring his uncle as a World War II hero that eventually is created into a motion picture by a present day director and cast of actors.2  Tom Hanks, a New York Times best-selling author and acclaimed actor, writes a colorful story that spans generations.

2. Generations: The Real Differences Between Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, Boomers and Silents - and What They Mean for America’s Future by Jean M. Twenge (Nonfiction)

America is now home to six different generations: Silents, Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, Gen Z, and the soon-to-be named generation of those born after 2012.  Each generation possesses a unique outlook to the world around them that has been shaped by the formative years they were born in.  Professor Jean Twenge attempts to unpack the data surrounding generations and what events or experiences impact their unique perspectives.3

3. The Celebrants by Stephen Rowley (Fiction)

After 28 years, some old college friends are long overdue on their pact.  They all agree to travel to Big Sur in California to throw each other “living funerals”.  As each shares the changes in their lives, both the highs and the lows, one friend reveals a secret that could forever change their bond of friendship.2 Stephen Rowley uses wit and heartfelt emotion to build realistic characters who present the powerful theme of lifelong friendship.

4. Hello, Beautiful by Ann Napolitano (Fiction)

What critics are calling a modern take on Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women, this book introduces you to a lively family of four sisters who welcome in an abandoned young man, William Walters.  As he gets to know this chaotic household full of love, ambition and hope, William begins to find contentment.  Yet his dark past catches up to him, threatening his newfound family and their dreams for the future.4  Ann Napolitano creates a compelling story of rich characters who exude themes of love, loyalty and family.

Reading has the ability to transport you to other places, perspectives and time periods.  A gripping story can have you on the edge of your seat, eagerly anticipating the characters’ next moves.  There is even so much that can be learned through the power of reading like different generations, history, or scientific discoveries.  Take time this summer to learn something new or go on an adventure, armed with a good book.  The effect could not only help develop a passion for reading, it may even have positive impacts on your mental health.  Happy reading this summer!
