When to Enroll in a Medigap Plan

The best time to sign up for a Medigap plan is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period. Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period lasts for 6 months and begins as soon as you are at least 65 years old and enrolled in Medicare Part B.

During your Medigap Open Enrollment Period, insurance companies cannot use medical underwriting to determine your Medigap premiums or plan acceptance based on your health.

You may still sign up for a Medigap plan after your enrollment period closes, but you may be subject to underwriting and might end up paying more for your plan.
