During the Great Depression, senior citizens were disproportionately affected and the savings they had accrued for years were wiped away seemingly overnight. In 1935, President Roosevelt responded by enacting the Social Security Act in order to provide some financial relief to America’s older population. That opened the floodgates and perks in the form of government assistance and discounts offered by private companies became the norm, highlighted by the creation of Medicare in 1965 and Medigap years later.
