Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) plans help cover some of the out-of-pocket costs of Original Medicare. Because Medigap plans are standardized by the federal government, they are not rated. However, some Medigap plans are more popular than others.

Read on to learn about some of the most popular Medigap plans to decide if any of them are a good fit for you.

3 Popular Medigap Plans

Rather than shop for top-rated Medicare Supplement plans, it may be more helpful to look at Medigap plans that are the most popular among seniors. Below, we look at three of the most popular Medigap plans in 2019.

1. Medigap Plan F

Medigap Plan F is the most popular Medicare Supplement Insurance plan. This is likely because it is the most comprehensive Medigap policy available today, providing coverage for all nine of Medigap’s basic benefit areas.

Medigap Plan F provides coverage for:

  • Medicare Part A coinsurance and hospital costs
  • Medicare Part B coinsurance or copayment
  • First three pints of blood
  • Medicare Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment
  • Coinsurance for skilled nursing facility
  • Medicare Part A deductible
  • Medicare Part B deductible
  • Medicare Part B excess charge
  • 80% of foreign travel emergency care

2. Medigap Plan G

Another popular Medigap plan is Medigap Plan G. Medigap Plan G provides almost the same benefits as Medigap Plan F, but is usually less expensive.

Medigap Plan G provides coverage for:

  • Medicare Part A coinsurance and hospital costs
  • Medicare Part B coinsurance or copayment
  • First three pints of blood
  • Medicare Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment
  • Coinsurance for skilled nursing facility
  • Medicare Part A deductible
  • Medicare Part B excess charge
  • 80% of foreign travel emergency care

The only difference in benefits between Medigap Plan F and Medigap Plan G is that Plan G does not provide coverage for your Medicare Part B deductible, which is $185 per year in 2019.1

3. Medigap Plan C

Medigap Plan C is another popular option, featuring almost the same benefits as Medigap Plan G.

Medigap Plan C provides coverage for:

  • Medicare Part A coinsurance and hospital costs
  • Medicare Part B coinsurance or copayment
  • First three pints of blood
  • Medicare Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment
  • Coinsurance for skilled nursing facility
  • Medicare Part A deductible
  • Medicare Part B deductible
  • 80% of foreign travel emergency care

The only difference in benefits between Medigap Plan C and Medigap plan G is that Medigap Plan C provides coverage for your Medicare Part B deductible (Plan G does not), and Medigap Plan C does not provide coverage for Medicare Part B excess charges (Plan G does).

Other Plan Options

Keep in mind that you are not limited to the most popular Medigap plans, and the right plan for someone else may not be the right plan for you. Instead of searching for the top-rated Medicare Supplement Insurance plans, the better option may be to consider what benefits you need.

When shopping, ask yourself which out-of-pocket costs concern you the most. Are you concerned about paying your Medicare Part B coinsurance? Your excess charges? Your skilled nursing facility coinsurance?

Choose a plan that provides coverage in the areas that are most important to you.
