When to Get a Medigap Insurance Quote

The best time to purchase a Medicare Supplement Insurance (or Medigap) plan is during your six-month Medigap open enrollment period. It begins the first day that you are:

  • 65 years of age or older

-  and -

  • Enrolled in Medicare Part B

During the open enrollment period, you cannot be subjected to medical underwriting by an insurance provider, which means you cannot be charged more for a plan or denied coverage altogether based on your current health status. But once your one-time open enrollment period ends, insurance companies may apply underwriting to your quote or even deny you coverage entirely.

It's easy to understand then why it's so important to enroll in a Medicare Supplement Insurance plan during the open enrollment period. It's a good idea to begin gathering quotes in the early stages of this period — or even prior to the start of it — in order to allow yourself ample time to select the right plan at the right price.

Factors That May Affect a Quote

In addition to any potential medical underwriting, there are a few other factors that can affect a Medicare Supplement Insurance quote.

Location

Not every Medicare Supplement Insurance plan is made available in every state. And because these plans are sold by private insurance companies, quotes can be affected by the local market and can differ in price from one state to the next.

Pricing Structure

Medicare Supplement Insurance plans may be priced using one of three different models.

  1. Community-rated
These Medigap plans are available to customers at the same cost, regardless of age.

  2. Issue age-rated
The cost of these plans are based on your age at the time of your application.

  3. Attained age-rated
The rates for these Medicare Supplement Insurance plans increase as you age.

Discounts

The price of a Medicare Supplement Insurance plan may also be affected by any discounts offered by the companies selling the plans. Discounts are sometimes made available to married couples, non-smokers, women and customers who pay their premiums through an electronic funds transfer.

Coverage

Each Medicare Supplement Insurance plan offers a slightly different combination of benefits than the rest. Typically, plans that offer more coverage can cost more than plans offering less coverage.
