June 2010 Medigap Plan Update

Recent changes in Medicare laws have brought forth new changes to Medicare Supplement Insurance policies. These changes are necessary because of the complementary nature of Medicare and Medicare Supplement coverage.

Beginning on June 1, 2010, two changes take place on the list of Medicare Supplement plan options available to consumers. The changes impact both the plan types available, and the benefits available within such plans.

Plan Changes

  1. Plans No Longer Available: Medigap Plans E, H, I, J, and High-Deductible J will no longer be available for sale new consumers. (If you have one of these plans, you will be able to keep those plans.)
  2. New Plans M & N: New plan choices, plans M and N, will be offered
    1. Medigap Plan N offers benefits that are similar to Medigap Plan F (the most popular plan choice), but with a $50 ER visit co-payment and a $20 doctor visit co-payment for doctor visits. While pricing will be dependent on each company, the premium cost of Plan N will be lower than the cost of Plan F.
    2. Medigap Plan M will offer similar benefits to Plan F, but will only cover 50% of the Part A deductible and 50% of the Part B deductible.

Benefit Changes

  1. Part B Co-insurance: Plans K, L and N will require the payment of a portion of Part B coinsurance and copayments. All other Medigap policies pay Part B coinsurance or copayments at 100%.
  2. Hospice Care: Starting with policies effective on or after June 1, 2010, Hospice Part A co-insurance (outpatient prescription drug and in-patient respite care co-insurance) will be covered as a new, basic benefit.
    1. Plan K will cover 50%, and Plan L will cover 75% of these costs.
  3. Plans D & G: At-home recovery benefit is eliminated from plans D and G sold on or after June 1, 2010. If you bought your plan D or G prior to this change taking effect, there will be no impact on your existing plan benefits.
  4. Plan G: Part B excess charge benefit in Plan G will increase from 80% to 100% for plans sold on or after June 1, 2010
